Who is the Axis of Evil?

May 16, 2008 / by akivibes

I live in the United States now, and I used to live in Japan.  Those countries are pretty peaceful comparing to other countries, such as Israel.  Why does the war happen after cold war’s environment?  There is an essay by Samuel Phillips Huntington that is “The Clash of Civilization”.  He believes that the factor of the confrontation is a collision between a civilization and another civilization which has different culture to another in the world after cold war.  In his classification, he mentions that the world has about seven or eight cultures.

I believe that the globalization will be solved to this problem in the near future if the globalization infiltrates all over the world by a pace as it is.  That should be one of the advantages of globalization.  For example, turkey is going to join the European Union.  “Turkey (where 99% of the population is officially Muslim) is due to join the European Union within the next decade” (Burton 130).  When Turkey joins the EU, the globalization will go to next step because Western and Muslim culture have been fighting after nine eleven.  This will be very good thing to happen because it is difficult to accept extreme thought in an age today, such as Western and Muslim thought.  Those two cultures are very different.  So, if one culture says “axis of evil” (Burton 130) to another culture, two civilizations will not be able to intersect.  Therefore, it is important to know, and to receive other party's culture because in the present world, the idea of the globalization, which people from different culture share similar sense of value, is very important.  Today’s people believe that the two cultures, Islam and West, are opposite.

What I learned from writing blogs is binary way to think, such as us vs. them, friend vs. stranger, familiar vs. unknown, and so on.  Further, we need to balance between those two binary.  Furthermore, it is very dangerous to put my position only on one side.  Therefore, knowing only one culture between West and Islam is dangerous. If this kind of person became the president of the country, he/she will address about another culture as an “axis of evil” (Burton 130).

If there are two people, one has experienced only one culture in his/her entire life.  On the other hand, another has experienced both cultures.  The person who knows two cultures can balance his mind between two cultures, but another can not.  Therefore, globalization is good thing to deal with this issue because people in the world share similar sense of value.  I believe that this is the goal to finish the clash of civilization, and the idea globalization is able to go beyond the idea clash of civilization.

I believe the Axis of Evil is the person or culture that demands to be on top, the culture that wants to be followed regardless.  Why can't we all just get along???  I think we have heard this question somewhere close to home. :)
