Hestia and Icarus

February 11, 2008 / by akivibes

I bet that everyone has the sense of Hestia and Icarus. Now, I am studying abroad to come to Chico. I am from Japan. In summer 2006, I have gotten awful experience that I have never experienced before which was a car accident in Chico. Then, I was at the hospital to hospitalize for two weeks. After that, I went back to Japan, my home country, and staying there for six months.

Hestia is the god who is the symbol of home. In contrast, Icarus is the symbol of liberty. From my perspective, Hestia, means Japan which my family is in. And, my liberty, Icarus, is Chico or the United states or everywhere except my home town. Before the accident happened, I had strongly thought that learning and seeing different cultures were more important than staying in my home because I can totally get the different view, and I can encounter so many acquaintances that have different view and culture to compare to me. If I had decided not studying abroad, I could not get such golden opportunities. Therefore, I have really been satisfying that I came to the United States, then, I learned so many things, however, when I was staying my home for half year after the accident, I also discovered many important things which I did not care before.  I thought that I love my family indeed. Then, I came back to Chico in January,2007 to go back to school. After that, I appreciated to be here. I also love Chico.

I think that the idea of Hestia and Icarus are both important. If I was in Hestia, my home, forever, I would never experience things in Icarus view, but I realized that there is my home which I can go back. Therefore, I can feel other worlds are great because I have my Japanese culture.

In my conclusion, I can say that I can identify more Icarus than Hestia.  However, I do not think it is an important to recognize myself.  I do not think that Icarus or Hestia is more important.  There is Icarus, then, I can feel Hestia is precious. In contrast, there is Hestia, so, I can feel Icarus is important. Therefore, one should find out optimum proportion between Icarus and Hestia case by case in my journey which called my life.

I also agree.  I think we have to encounter both in order to decide which suits us best.  This enables us to make an informed (not ignorant) decision.
